What Version of You Do Others See? What Version of Yourself Do You See?

27 September 2026

When “I’m fine” becomes automatic

Most of us have a version of ourselves that other people see.

It might be the person who goes to work, looks after the family, keeps things moving and answers “I’m fine” when someone asks how things are going.

From the outside, that version of us can look like we have things together.

But the version we see when things are quiet can sometimes be very different.

We may notice the worry we have been carrying, the conversations we keep replaying, the relationship that doesn’t feel quite right, or simply the feeling that something in life has changed and we are not sure what to do with it.

Both versions can be you

This doesn’t necessarily mean we are pretending or being dishonest with other people.

Sometimes we become very good at functioning while something underneath still needs our attention.

We can be capable and uncertain.

Strong and tired.

Connected to others and still feel alone.

The difficulty can come when the version everyone else sees becomes the only version we allow ourselves to show.

What version of yourself do you see?

It can be worth asking yourself a few simple questions.

What do other people see when they look at me?

What am I experiencing that they may not see?

And when I look at myself, am I seeing the whole person — or only the parts I think I should be?

Sometimes having somewhere to talk openly can help us understand the gap between how life looks from the outside and how it actually feels on the inside.

A place to talk. A place to be heard. A place to understand.
